First time we saw self-levitation was when Starlight used it in the S5 finale.

Here’s an idea: ignore what the show says about magic. It’s always contradictory and makes no sense. The show actually implies that fusing a bird with an orange is somehow easier than a sex change spell, so I officially ignored everything about magic since then.
Not with Cutie Marks, no. They really throw a monkey wrench into any power level discussions when it comes to this show.
Plus, Velvet is probably using her entire magical focus on levitation here for only about 25 seconds. Whereas Starlight was levitating herself throughout the Cutie Re-Mark while casting all kinds of powerful magic without any visible signs of fatigue.
I imagine self-levitation is something that many unicorns can do, but only powerful ones with high stamina and magical finesse can do well for a length of time with any semblance of coordination. Any Joe unicorn off the street would be liable to break their neck if they attempted it without building up their magical skill and strength over time. The same could be said for people and activities like gymnastics and rock-climbing.

It’s not mental gymnastics it’s going off of what the show has shown as difficult. If you see someone casually lift 500 pounds it’s a safe bet they can lift 400.

So because Twilight Velvet can do ONE thing that Twilight Sparkle cannot, that makes her better than her daughter?
As soundtea mentioned, Twilight self-levitates in the S3 premiere, specifically 8 minutes and 47 seconds into part 2. Until we see Twilight Velvet self-levitate in a flashback, Twilight Sparkle did it first.

Starlight certainly appears to be more magically adept than unicorn Twilight was. Twilight, since becoming alicorn, has seen a tremendous magic boost. She can technically fly using the levitation spell now, but she has wings.
I think that’s the basis for many of the most frequent commenters to be on this site. That’s what you do when you have no creativity, pedantically criticize everything else to make yourself feel less empty inside.
Don’t forget, Cutie Marks. This could be her Special Talent, and not indicative of overall magic prowess. Cutie Marks really fuck with power scaling.
