Honestly, all they’d have to do is link them vaguely to some mythological creatures and everything would be hunky-dory. “The Parrot Pirates are MLP’s version of harpies, and the cats are, uh, cait sith. Those are their official names. Put it on the wiki!” Or something related to Tefnut/Bastet/Sekhmet. One shrug later and the setting’s a bit tighter again.

The Diamond Dogs were actually based on trolls, in Lauren Faust’s original idea for the episode. It’s just that straight-up trolls would be too humanoid, so (much like giving Tirek and Arimaspi goat features) she introduced an animal to the mix.

I wouldn’t say that. The older gens had actual humans in the past. I thought these characters did look out of place with what we’ve seen so far.  
I know some people will bring up iron will but he has hooves and is based off a mythological creature and the Diamond Dogs are a gorilla like dog creature. The other ones went off that aesthetic imo
