Actually, when you think about it, whatever female dragon was Spike’s mother just laid the egg. Since Spike didn’t hatch, perhaps it’s because the egg was unfertilized, like the eggs you buy at the market. Twilight’s magic actually completed the fertilization process, making her the “male” in the process… so she’s actually Spike’s father.
 
Or, yeah… she’s just using one of Shining’s mugs.
