In the days when Britain had an empire countries like Australia would have the union jack in the top left corner. Back then it was a colony, some countries after becoming independent from Britain changed their flag like say Canada. Last I heard New Zealand was having a shot at doing so too.
 
We are all still within the Commonwealth, so the Queen is still technically and figuratively our head of state.

No but your misunderstanding is plausible (like how some people think the royal family are still in power in the UK but in reality they’re figureheads of state and the country is run by a prime minister so a constitutional monarchy. Interesting enough, some countries use the same Westminster parliament system with some minor differences i.e. Canada and Australia), best call it an Australian flag and move on.
