But then Twilight did very adult things at a young age with the pressures of school and all, and Applejack’s freaking parents died and she moved to Manehatten for awhile. Probably running away from the grief of losing her parents?

Less to do with Twilight, more to do with the series in general.
 
Pretty much every notable character has a fucked up childhood. Pinkie literally worked on the rock farm as a kid while Fluttershy got bullied in school. Starlight’s bad childhood experience is recurring character trait. And Spike is STILL a child in the show (to say nothing of how dragons treat him).

Speaking Fancy -

These comics are super cute and all, and I really hate to be THAT guy, but this is the perfect reason why Twilight can only reasonably be a big sister figure to Spike, because someone else had to take care of him instead of her.
 
Believe you me when I say that a child taking care of a baby is something to be avoided if at all possible.
