I doubt anyone will read this, but to put my two-cents on the conversation below, I’ve only heard writing out the number in text only if the number is small enough. If it’s a large number, like in the second to last panel, or in the thousands just writing the numbers is acceptable, as gets the same message across without making the text look messy.

Thing is, it’s also not faster to read in many cases, because it foists the need to translate unto the reader, who may not even know the acronym or abbreviation (also goes for the writer, of course). The question is how much you lose by writing it out versus how important it is to be understood by more ponies.

It creates disconnect between what’s said and what you read. Did the character say “kilometer” or really “km”? Moreover, it tends to look lazy, like the author couldn’t be bothered to write actual words.

One of those rules of writing type of things. It is actually rather grating to see someone write km instead of kilometers in a story or text for instance. If you are really into what you are reading, a story perhaps, it may drag you out of it trying to figure out if they were saying kilometers, it was a typo, or what a km is if you are not familiar with that shorthand.

one thing i never understud is when some people use words instead of the appropriate symbols/acronyms which would make a lot more sense, take less time to write, take up less space and less effort.

like why “twenty-six” when you can just write and read “26” a lot faster
why “kilometer” or “20 degrees Celcius” when “km” and “20°C” are again faster to write and read
