I like to think Hardhat is actually a prince in exile, kind of like Hercules performing the 12 Labors.
 
I like a combination of these headcanons. Sure, he’s royalty, but he’ll be damned if he’s gonna act like he’s entitled to anything. Just to prove it, he’s set out and made a life of his own, complete with a solid blue-collar job, and a bungalow on the outskirts of Las Pegasus.
 
Also a bit reminiscent of Lawrence from Office Space to me, for some reason:
