They were running out of apples to feed the growing population, so they decided now was the best time to move up on the food chain.
Well, zebras appear to be a one-member race (Zecora), and I’m pretty sure the Appleoosans ate all the buffalo by now.

Speaking of, I’m surprised we didn’t see any zebras at Friendship Academy. Or buffalo.
