I kinda prefer him as a nice guy, it would explain where Tiara gets her more nicer/vulnerable side from, and as you said he got along with the Apple family, and does friendly business with them.
 
I honestly kinda hated the human EqG version of him, which turned him into another typical “old evil rich cartoon dude.” (Which is rather cliché/stereotypical, and seems to be encouraging more “class-warfare” in America.) They even made him look meaner in that.  
They already established his wife Spoiled Rich is a snob, I wonder why they didn’t use her instead, instead of shitting up Filthy’s characterization. (Much like the IDW series did. Not hating on IDW, BTW.)

To be honest, Filthy Rich is a good guy, in the show it seems he’s more respectable and a fair business man, keeping Diamond Tiara in check like in that one episode with Granny Smith’s story.  
However the Legend of Everfree one just seems like the opposite, so…
