They are literally dragon horses.

Strictly speaking, the dragon horses would be the longmas. Qilins have typically been depicted as creatures resembling both dragons and a variety of hoofed animals, including horses, deer, oxen and giraffes.

Kind of tangential, but this talk of giraffes on a kirin picture reminded me of an interesting bit of trivia: there’s been a tendency in East Asian culture to associate qilins/girins/kirins/whichever spelling suits with giraffes, dating back to when the Chinese explorer Zeng He traveled to Africa and brought back, among other gifts to the then-reigning Emperor, a pair of giraffes. The Emperor declared that these were qilins, and the association stuck. Even today, the Korean and Japanese words girin and kirin are used to name both the mythical creature and the real-life long-necked mammal.

So while me may not be getting civilized, talking giraffes in the way we hoped we might, we’re still technically getting civilized, talking giraffes… in two specific translations, granted.

They are literally dragon horses.
I mean, sure, they’re not based on the offspring of a mythological creature with a regular creature like the hippogryphs are, but I can almost guarantee you that there’s gonna exactly no mention on how they have similar features to ponies or dragons. Or at the very least they’re gonna point out the fact that they’re basically quadrupedal Eastern dragons and leave it at that.

Kirin is not a descendant of the Loong,And their status is equal

And how much do you want to bet that, just like the hippogryphs are not related in any way to neither the ponies nor the gryphons, the kirin are not related in any way to the ponies nor the dragons.
