Random ass fun fact about sharks: Durring the 1800’s, cavalry swords had handles that were wrapped in shark skin. It was used because leather, when held tightly, would cause the hand to sweat making the sword harder to grip. Cavalry swords were not used to slice or stab, rather they were used to bludgeon infantrymen on the head or knock them over when swept under their legs when a speeding horse passed them by. Since shark skin did not make the hand sweat like leather, it made using the sword easier to use until cavalry troops were pretty much removed from warfare with the invention of the Maxim Machine Gun in WWI.
Learned all of that in Civil War class two years ago.
