Imo, unicorns can’t grow plants, unless doing so is highly correlated to their natural talent, i.e Mistmane, who could grow beautiful flowers - because her talent involves beauty.
 
Alicorns are essentially all three races, so that explains why Twilight can grow flowers too.
 
Apart from that, we’ve never seen unicorns growing plants (as far as I’m aware of).
 
Kirins aren’t ponies - they’re a completely different creature that’s able to walk on water, grow plants (it says so in Wikipedia in regards to mythology) and burst into flames. The fact kirins grow plants doesn’t mean unicorns can.

I think it’s less about subtlety and more so that the writers really just don’t think about things like that the vast majority of the time and it causes their world-building to suffer from it.
 
Same reason that unicorn magic becomes increasingly broken as the series goes on, so long as Twilight or Starlight can do whatever random spell they please for the sake of the plot or even just a gag.

Another fix I’d be in favor of. Really, I just feel bad for the earth ponies. At least the villain of the season finale isn’t another unicorn.

I have a theory that magically-grown plants are prone to wither away quicker than those naturally cared for.

Thing is, if earth ponies are supposed to be the only ones who can grow the food, why do magic-users keep showing up who can make plants grow without any apparent problems? That kirin doesn’t seem to be straining much.

I think unicorns can grow things on a small scale. But they have to actively invoke their magic, which takes energy, to do so and aren’t as efficient as Earth Ponies that can do this passivly on a massive scale just by walking on their fields.

So, if kirin can grow plants, and they have telekinesis, what was the point of earth ponies again?
