I’m actually still kinda sad over the series’ cancellation. Especially, ‘cause now the SatA.M./cartoon characters, (including rebooted ones like Breezie) are off-limits now, thanks to the Penders drama. (As now Sega are probably too paranoid to use them, in fear of more legal drama, even though it’s hard to prove who created characters like Sally.)

Actually, what happened was Ken tried to copyright his Sonic characters behind Archie & Sega’s backs, which started all the legal B.S. (Apparently, he was upset that the Bioware RPG DS title “Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood” had similarities between things like his Dark echidna Legion, and the Dark Brotherhood. Ironically, his Dark Legion was basically based off the BORG from Star Trek, so it wasn’t entirely original either.)
Some sources claim Sega/Archie actually sued Ken first, (with him trying to counter-sue) but he shouldn’t of tried to claim entire ownership of things that weren’t entirely his in the first place. (Ken really doesn’t understand how licensed comics work. He acts more entitled to the series then Sega. In fact, on his website at one point he asked fans to put “copyright Penders” on any Archie Sonic comic image they put online… I’m serious.)
The only thing I kinda agree with Ken on was he probably deserved some kudos, and cash for the “Sonic Archives” reprint books, and such, but he apparently wanted too much for them.

What makes the whole situation especially cringy is some characters like Robin Hood the Hedgehog, and all the Knuckles-look-alikes (Knuckles’ girlfriend, Knuckles’ Mother/Father, Knuckles’ future daughter, ect.) basically look like recolors/redesigns of Sega’s characters, so he’s basically claiming ownership of what are practically officially-approved fan-characters.
At one point, Ken even tried to claim ownership on Evil Sonic/Scourge, (who’s basically “an evil dimensional counterpart to Sonic,” like Owlman is to Batman) even though the Scourge the Hedgehog redesign was made by artist Patrick Spaziante, and he had nothing to do with it.

And who knows how long the Sonic comics would have lasted if it wasn’t for all the lawsuits.

For those that don’t know Ken Penders, a former writer for the comic, decided to sue the comic for continuing to use the characters he created even though everyone signed a contract that gave Sega ownership of any characters created for the comic.

Archie lost their copy in a fire or something and naturally Ken Penders pretended to have not signed such a thing (after years of admitting that he did). The lawsuit went on for years and resulted in the comic having to be rebooted to remove certain characters. Then later on Ken Penders encouraged another former writer to sue Archie/Sega (this time over royalties with the reprinted issues).

This was the last straw for Sega and when it came time to renew the comic license with Archie, they chose not to renew it and instead gave the license to IDW.

Twilight’s new students experience Nightmare Night in Ponyville for the first time! Big scares are in store, but things start to get downright dangerous when they wander into a very haunted Castle of the Two Sisters!

An annual tradition goes delightfully awry!
