Okay, so we know that alicorns are naturally taller than other ponies, but what’s this creature’s excuse?

It feels really odd to see another pony with Celestia’s body type I the show.

I kinda wish Spike would have run into a Kirin, like Autumn Blaze. There there could be answers to the question of whethere a Kirin really is a hybrid of a dragon and some equine, or if it just shows up as another mythical creature.

I find it a little bit ironic that these two are the only kirins that get actual dialogue

Only based on what I can glean without english dialog: there’s world building, Kirin are cute as anything, and we know about the great song in it.
 
Unfortunately, it is a story that feels that it has ponies tacked on. AJ+FS have a part to drive it, and their map-sent quest does resolve the episode in the way most map-sent episodes end (after the two sent bicker between each other). The solution didn’t require ponies (heck, it only required squirrels!)
 
At least the end moral wasn’t related to poor communications as 99% of episodes end up being. More so understanding how to resolve conflict in friendships without literally becoming fire demons.

So, was this a good episode? I’m really excited for it and I want to know if that excitement is justified.

No, they already had one special guest non-Canadian voice actor for this episode, Rachel Bloom. They wouldn’t have a second non-Canadian actor, much less a Seattle actor. They’ve had Los Angeles actors before, but not Seattle. (I’m assuming that’s where Kate Higgins is from, since she’s in a lot of Nintendo/video game things.)
