Not at all, replacing Imperium battleships, however, is where they are weakest. Mankind lost a lot of the schematics for these mammoth ships in the past 15,000 years, and new designs are either seen as heretical or are kept for the Adeptus Mechanicus on Mars. Void shields are no joke, which allows Imperium ships to engage in Greek style ship to ship ramming. This also applies to the other factions as well, especially my personal favorite greenskins- the Orks, who excel at smashing their ramshackle kruzas at any ship unfortunate enough to cross their path. WAAAGH!

At least it wasn’t a couple of ships from the Imperium of Man. Purge the Equine xenos!

Ponies would actually do well in the Covenant I think. Earth Ponies are better at menial work than Grunts, Pegasi would be better scouts than Jackals and Drones, and Unicorns can serve niches between Elites and Engineers.

Vitrification. There’s a book, called Glasslands, that deals with the post war issues of human-covenant relations, and there are frequent visits to glassed worlds.

This is a Covenant ship from the game series Halo.  
The Covenant is a genocidal religious order made up of several different alien species. They hate humanity, because humans are the rightful successors to the alien race they worship. (But only a few influential leaders know this, the actual propaganda for the masses paint humanity as unclean heretics who must be purged from existance.)  
That glow in the middle of the ship near the end is the start up sequence for firing a massive beam of plasma down on the ground. The covenant are really thorough, turning the entire surface of worlds into volcanic glass by melting everything.
