I don’t recommend that site to people anymore, since they tried to cash in on their users, but yeah the “cool dad” or “cool mom” trope is pretty neat. I like when they can portray parents as people, without necessarily making them terrible parents.

It’s a common trope (or “trope”, including the quotation marks) - IMHO you confirmed it exists if you’ve seen it on psychology essays - I made up in the spur of a moment. It’s not on TV Tropes (apparently). Still, I think it qualifies.
 
Self-explanatory, though, I’m referring to those, let’s call them “cool” moms and dads whose connection to their son is better defined as “Best Friends Forever” than “motherly/fatherly love”. If it isn’t there on TV Tropes already, I think I could try and ask on the forums,

I think when you’re young, if you’re fortunate enough to be blessed with parents (or a parent, as the case may be) who love you and care for you and do all the things good parents should do, you can end up thinking that’s just the normal way things work for everyone and have no idea there are others in the world who would kill for someone who showed that kind of concern or interest. It was actually why I made the comment that apparently inspired this (not that I can prove it, since anonymous and all, but I swear I did) in the first place, as the idea that Button might grumble about typical parent concerns while completely oblivious that Apogee desperately wants that kind of relationship with her mom seemed appropriate to the story and how these things can go in real life.

So crazy idea here, trade moms for a day

I’d like to see a version of this where the eyebrows and eyelines aren’t visible through the hair, for comparison.

Am I the only one that over the year has ended up percieving Cream Heart as an example of the common trope “parent with the soul of an older sibling”?

This is a particularly interesting piece. I like the contrast between Button’s mom and the unspoken difference Apogee knows from Delta. It gives good insight to what different single parents and just different parents can be like.
 
It also scratches my writer’s itch just a bit. Putting out a little ficlet based on this might be neat. Hm.
