Again I’ve nothing against superhero stories (well technically jedies are superheroes too) and I’ve nothing against any stories. And I’ve nothing against making a character based on other character. The only important thing how the character is used. If you hadn’t noticed there’re thousands movie adaptations which have practically nothing to original stories. Disney’s “Hercules” has very few from Greek mythology but it has it’s right to exist.
BTW if you thint that Nyx is a cheat you don’t see what the real cheat looks like.
@Beltar
Saying “All these other fics do bad or even worse with this oc treatment” does not excuse Nyx’s existence as a “Luna OC”. And I’m not trying to push my opinion here. If you don’t like superhero stories that’s your prerrogative. I have mine.
The 1st point you must accept when you start to read ANY fan-fiction is you can meet ANY modification of established character. Most of them you wouldn’t like.
There’re thousands fics which not just create their OCes but simply use canon alicorns. Shipping Twilight and Luna alone deserves the separate bookcase.
And Twilight Sparkle is very strong char. too. I can say extra strong.
There was backlash about Riri Williams becoming Iron Heart and just “being able to do whatever Tony Stark did” right where he left off with no problems at all.
You missed the point. The new character does some complex things without any trainig, explanation and etc. Like Rey from SW E7 does anything like fighting with light swords or piloting spaceship or HiMMler suddenly proclaimed to be equal to Twilight Sparkle in magic who just Element of Magic and trained in magic professionally by best teachers since early childhood. And that’s stupid. Or countless HiE stories where the character is accepted without any reason and everypony including Celestia ready to lick his butt and then he saves everybody and has sex with Twilight.
But let’s imagine that somehows Tony Stark’s personality was copied to robot (like “Robocop”) and the robot have similar behavior. This would be logical.
Technically you can create your hero as you wish. Piter Parker was bitten by mutant spider and turned to superhero. Seriously? People loves stories with such stupid plot??
Author can do any experiments even reborn extra powerfull crazy villian as a child. I even saw good HiE fics which could be described as 100% “Marty Stu human meets Twilight” because the author understood where’s the border between funny and ridiculous.
Because the most important thing is how you’ll use your hero. IMHO “Past Sins” is much better than any superhero story I know (OK I’m not fan of them) because it not just create an overpowered character and then somehow to glue him\her with external personal problems but makes Nyx native to her universe and everything what happens with her comes from her own nature.
And “Past Sins” has many flaws some because it’s fan-fiction but it’s very precise in key moments.
I tried skimming but tl;dr because you’re judging her without reading it.
Just read it. It’s not that hard to listen to an audio reading or something either.
@Apex Soundwave
What I said was only on a superficial level. I have never read past sins nor would be interested in reading it. There’s one thing about taking pre-estabilished characters and reimagining their stories in a fun and intriguing way, and then there’s turning said character into another one for the sake of creating your almighty alicorn oc
alicorn oc’s are the lowest of the low among the fandom
No, I don’t know any other “famous” alicorn ocs the same way Nyx seems to be. The whole races argument within the fandom always made it clear that every other alicorn oc with no name out there had some arbitrary badly explained reason for it. Now, I can’t judge the writing in Past Sins because I already said I never read it, but I do understand where people come from when they feel somewhat insulted that someone took Luna and rebirthed her to make their oc through some sort of unknown circumstance. It all usually points to the same direction.
I don’t like Nyx all that much, personally. And I don’t feel like giving a fair chance to an unknown taking the legacy of another character and being (relatively) a Mary Sue about it. It’s sorta the same case of what happened in Marvel Comics. There was backlash about Riri Williams becoming Iron Heart and just “being able to do whatever Tony Stark did” right where he left off with no problems at all. It feels a little disrespectful, a little disingenuous and kinda like the creators just wanted to slide their unwanted oc into a somebody else’s canon. With that said, Nyx makes for good shitpost. The same way people like to rip on black and red Shadow the Hedgehog oc’s, so I kinda appreciate that for what it is.
@CuteFlame
I somewhat agree, but I knew better than to judge her too much before I learned about what she was actually like. Sometimes I’m good at that, sometimes not.
Honestly no matter what people say, if you only judge by design alone alicorn oc’s are the lowest of the low among the fandom. Everything in Nyx’s character just screams “I’m a meme” at first glance.
Wnen real Mary Sue was inserted in the show itself they started to scream that she’s not. I guess they even think that “Avengers” was a good movie when in reality it’s about bunch of shitted Mary Sue doing shit.
@justanotherponi
Waaaaay back during the first great pony drought of 2011, the fledgling fandom was starved of new content. It was in this environment that Past Sins rose to prominence. The art used as it’s cover caught attention, Nyx was very cute, and the fandom was fascinated with anything involving Luna or Nightmare Moon in those days, so it gained a considerable following, particularly on Equestria Daily.
This popularity led to some backlash, especially among the 4chan crowd. Some of this was derived from legitimate criticism of the fanfic, but much of the ire was focused on the concept of Nyx herself, seeing her as a Mary Sue as a result of her design and being an alicorn. The breaking point came when a poll about which pony looked cutest in socks on Equestria Daily jokingly included her and she beat Fluttershy, at which point the anti-Nyx faction exploded with rage, and it practically became a meme to hate her.
Years later, in light of the drama she caused back then, she was repurposed as a shitposting icon.

Didn’t watch past 4th season. People say it turned to shit then but I’ve nothing to say about.
And how many of them you know? The fact is there are only 2 popular OCes: Nyx and Little Pip.
What do you mean? I think I know because I understand why she was disigned that way but I want to hear you first.
You’d almost think it’s intentional that she looks like Nightmare Moon.
What even was this rant. This isn’t on topic of the picture either.
As advice, name-calling and harsh language isn’t going to gain you followers.
