It’s actually not clear how it works. In other words…
your current filter.Do they see through extramission, but other, non-Nightmare light sources mess with their vision?
They don’t like light for the same reason we don’t like the dark. Their vision is basically inverted. They can see in the dark just fine but just see nothing but whiteness in bright daylight. A dark room with a dim lamp, they would see as a bright room with a dark patch in the middle :P
Does light hurt them or merely give them discomfort?
They don’t like light, but they can also be attracted by it like a moth :P
That’s why some ponies sleep with a nightlight on.
I see. Perhaps I’m assuming wrong here, but…since they’re shadow beings, I take they don’t like light very much?
Separate entities altogether. They come from a spooky shadow realm. Same place the Pony of Shadows came from :P

If it did, then I imagine it would be mostly for anxious parents-to-be, and the nightmares they would get would be something similar to Shrek’s nightmare in Shrek the Third.
