The Gate to Tartarus was first mentioned in the season two episode: It’s about Time, when Cerberus ran rampant in Ponyville but was soon befriended by Fluttershy. Twilight Sparkle then returned Cerberus to the Gate of Tartarus assumedly to guard the Equestrian Underworld.
