It is a joke, much like saying Luna’s chest armor looks like a bib. That said, the movie versions of Allan Grant and Ellie Sattler do look a lot like the below mentioned people and nothing like their book selves… Makes you wonder…
I hope this is a joke. They’re both based on Steve Irwin and his wife.
Steve Irwin was an Australian known as the Crocodile Hunter. He had a show where he’d track down wild animals like snakes and other reptiles and teach you about them. He was a very active wildlife conservationist who had a really positive impact on wildlife. Unfortunately he died in 2006 when he got stung in the heart by a stingray while shooting.
The fact that the character’s entrance was him wrestling a cragodile should have been a pretty obvious giveaway of who he was supposed to be.
The wrong type of hat, Alan Grant is American and not Australian nor muscular like Snap is. Her parents are based more on Crocodile Dundee and Steve Irwin, while the mother, is clearly Jane Goodall with a dash of Terri Irwin.

Sure, they could be borrowing that too. But I mean, if they wanted to parody Grant/Sattler, they could have included the telltale clothing elements, eg:
I used to watch him all the time as a kid. I was in disbelief when I heard he got killed that day, by a Stingray nonetheless.
Hard to believe it’s been 15 years already this year.
Too bad Steve Irwin died in 2006, wayyy before FiM starts.

Steve Irwin, yes. His wife, no. Jane Goodall, yes.
And they weren’t a couple.
Cinefix did a good video on that subject. In the book, there was a fucking generation gap between Grant and Sattler!

I could see a bit of Sue in there too. Lets just all agree they are a dash of everybody perhaps.
But Sam Neill is a New Zealander. I agree with them being more Dundee/Irwin & Goodall/Irwin though.

“Mane Allgood”
“Jane Goodall”
….whoa
I know right? The hat is like Dundee but he is clearly a more buff Steve Irwin.
They sure seem to be composites of all these established characters.

I think they are based on a couple of people/characters rather than just one.
