He’s probably just doing it as a way to get closer to Rarity. That said, I’ve always contended that Sweetie Belle should have a crush on Spike, just to make his and Rarity’s lives more awkward.

IDk but even before the idea of the shipping fuel i just always had a hunch that Spike got along better and seemed happier with sweetie belle then with scootaloo or apple bloom.
