VHS is a composite video format, storing color information mixed with brightness, causing edges (sharp changes in brightness) to have shifted colors, especially as the tape stretches over time and errors crop up. in addition there was no support for metadata, so any information on when it was recorded had to be encoded as pixels overlaid on top of the actual image.

I need some context here.
