No, you are the one overreacting here. This is a dumb joke, sure, like spamming “Pics or it didn’t happen”, but like that forsaken string of words, it’s dumb because it’s low-effort, common, and most importantly OBVIOUS.
Trust me, I’ve dealt with real gatekeepers. They tend to be far more in your face about it, and wouldn’t try to cover it up with “just a joke, bruh…”
It is a joke. Like replying to everything with “pics or it didn’t happen”.
The thing about jokes, generally, is that they’re meant to be funny. If they aren’t, they’re basically just dumb comments that the person who made them thought in their head sounded good. That, coupled with the fact that tone of voice is almost impossible to get across when posting text online, makes it very easy for any joke (even a good one, which this wasn’t) to fall as flat as a pancake.
Also, people often use the phrases “Oh, you just didn’t get the joke”, or “You just don’t have a sense of humour” to excuse bad “jokes” or as a way to pass off insults under the guise of jokes. Just insult someone (or a group) and then if they take offence at it “Oh, you’re too sensitive, it was only a joke” and that’s meant to make it somehow magically okay; it really doesn’t.
Tl;dr - I saw nothing in that BP’s comment which was worth considering as a joke.
