“Mother Kali demands a sacrifice … salvation is given by Mother Kali. Mother Kali! Mother Kali, grant me Your power!”
Mola Ram did the opposite of what She wanted – he committed cruelty, and perpetuated evil.
I had to check Wikipedia for MacGuffin, haha
You were correct: the children AND a single Sankara Stone were stolen from the same village, bringing the total number of Stones possessed by the Thuggee to three – we see these three Stones glowing when near each other, right after the human sacrifice, IIRC. The children were used as slave labor, to mine/dig the “catacombs,” as Mola Ram calls them, to find the two lost Stones.
The motivation for finding all five Stones was for “Kali to rule the world.” Translation for the storyline: the bad guys want power, the Sankara Stones are the MacGuffin to achieving that.
I think his motive was a combination of control over the cult adherents, and forced labor in the mines. I can’t remember if they were looking for more sankara stones or some other natural resource.
I know the historical background for it, but I can’t remember the priests motive in the movie. It’s been years since I’ve seen it.
Mola Ram and his followers are members of Thuggee, a real cult from India which was stamped out by the British in the 1800s. The adherents worshipped Kali and engaged in widespread robbery and ritual murder by means of strangulation. One Thuggee leader named Behram is said to have been present at 931 killings.
Kali is the goddess of death in the Hindu religion. This is from the second Indiana Jones movie where the priest sacrifices people to Kali for some reason.
