Same reason Discord didn’t just teleport all six of them to the four corners of the Earth, and rip off Celestia and Luna’s wings and horns in “Return of Harmony”: Discord likes to play games.
 
These six are gonna try and reform him, so he could have just teleported really far away and them dropped a meteor on Ponyville, but wouldn’t it be so much fun to take their noble goal and use it to drive them apart?

It really is a good thing she got rid of that stupid door. Was anyone else thinking during “A Canterlot Wedding” that even if they got through the Changelings, they wouldn’t be able to open the door anyway?
