i like to imagine gryphons evolved on their own path from eagles or lions kinda like how us humans are hung like horses compared to our incredibly close biological cousins the great apes, who have tiny dicks.
 
also when you think about it there is no biological way an eagle or lion could breed to produce a gryphon, so their apparent duality is neither lion nor eagle but rather 100% gryphon. front end gryphon, back end gryphon. it just makes the most sense to me. and because mlp is a “kids show” in terms of intended target and as such is legally not allowed to show genitalia we can only imagine what they look like back there. i for one heavily lean towards their dicks looking like this neither avian or feline, it is entirely it’s own design, a unique cock for a unique creature.
