Something like this would have been ten times better than the actual appearance.  
Just because he’s related to Rainbow Dash doesn’t mean he needs to have the exact same mane color, and since we’re dealing with vector graphics, a quick adjustment should consist of taking five seconds to slide a bar (or maybe a separate bar for each stripe of color at worst).
 
Plus, Rainbow Dash’s rainbow mane is terribly gaudy, and setting it next to such a contrastingly low saturation coat just makes it look all the worse and more incoherent.
