But nope, the writers tossed away logic and had Tempest recklessly turn Luna to stone while she was flying.  
Like Luna could have shattered to bits when she fell like that.  
Like does Tempest realize that was reckless? Especially since they would be one alicorn short(and since apparently they didn’t know about Flurry Heart somehow).

I think alicorn magic would do more of an effect against those armors but Celestia and Luna couldn’t test that since they got petrified.

Just because it has to be some adventuring quest for the Mane 6 doesn’t mean the sisters had to be shafted like that.  
At least let Luna escape or something. SOMETHING

While there was no way that the princesses were going to play a major role, otherwise it wouldn’t be an adventuring quest with mane six. But, they surely could put up a better fight.
 

 
That almost certainly is humiliating, but I would say that most pragmatic tactics are kinda humiliating for the victim.

If Luna actually got statue-ed while in mid-air, the scene is essentially an asspull there.  
Since Tempest would be reckless there since Luna could have been shattered to bits upon falling and they wouldn’t be able to take her magic.  
Tempest would have been in big trouble, but the fact the writers tossed away logic to ensure the princesses get shafted in the movie just pisses me off.
 
The surprise attack from the Obsidian Orbs doesn’t make the whole thing less humiliating. Like the sisters being caught off guard doesn’t make the scene less humiliating.

I guess the details not really important. The outcome is that Tempest defeated the Luna, Celestia, and Cadance like in 20 seconds. On one hand, I guess surprise attack with obsidian orb is a valid tactic, when you are fighting alicorn I guess you don’t want to fool around, on the other hand, I would say that as a seasoned warrior like Luna and Caletia would have a better reaction.

I think Luna was actually flying mid-air when she got hit, right?  
Don’t think she was purposely holding still for the orbs to hit.
 
I don’t know.. I don’t want to check the clips to see if I remember right or not since it hurts so bad in seeing what the movie did to Luna there.

You mean that bolt that Twilight shot at one of the creatures and it deflected from his shield? Well, in that case, that could be just regular unicorn magic bolt.
 
In this case, it looked like Luna and Celestia let them be hit by the orbs. Sure it was meant to clear stage for Mane 6 but still, it made them look kinda incompetent.

If Discord’s magic is strong enough to bypass the anti-magic protection of those armors but alicorn magic can’t then that means another blow to the credibility of alicorns there..  
(Seriously, alicorn magic is suppose to be among the most powerful magic in Equestria but all the shortcomings happening to Alicorns like Luna and Celestia is really dragging that reputation down)

I dunno. I don’t think anything labeled “anti-magic” should be 100% immune to all magic. That’s like similar immunities in Pokémon games. Now magical resistance is another thing and I’m sure Discord is powerful enough to break through a lot of those. As much as I would love to see Discord get fucked over, I don’t think a Storm Guard’s armor would be enough.

Even though, the anti-magic armor still not solve all problems. It just means Discord cannot take them out directly. He could just easily drop boulders on them.
 
Obsidian orb could work, though.
