I just had a look at the Wikipedia entry for akanaame. If all they do is lick the filth from bathrooms, and particularly bathtubs, I’m not convinced they’re such bad creatures to have around. As long as they don’t make the surfaces they lick slippery, hiring one might not be such a bad idea.

Then that may explain how she succeeds in making a business card, but not speaking, but I still say the tongue might have an impact. Though if either Italian or Japanese is her native language, I’d imagine both being easier to speak with that giant tongue of hers.

Since I can’t see her tongue in this image, I don’t know if I can make a judgment call on its length. However, I have seen at least one image of another pony with an unusually lengthy tongue. I wonder if he’s related.

It’s not her native language. Naturally though, she slurs some words and struggles with some pronunciations. Their species doesn’t talk a whole lot anyways since they use their tongue as a limb. It’s a big part of why they lick first and ask questions later: they figure you’ll understand what they want and what they’re doing, and they don’t care about getting permission anyways >:D

Maybe she only speaks broken English because her tongue could be used to scale the chimney of a three-story building. It’s pretty hard to say “She sells sea shells by the seashore” without that getting in the way.

A couple more questions:
 
Does she know what “tongue-in-cheek” means? Could her understanding of the term be why she has “Definitely not suspicious at all” at the end of her list there?
 
Also, her English can’t be all that bad, as her motto is worded “We laugh in the face of dirt,” and not “We laugh at the dirty face.”
