I always thought the design on Zecora’s flank was the zebra equivalent of a cutie mark. We don’t know what it means because we weren’t introduced to zebra culture; it probably has a really obvious meaning to a zebra.
Since this guy has an obvious-to-us cutie mark, I’m guessing Pony Life zebras are not a separate culture the way (we assumed) FIM ones were.
Though the Saddle Arabians ones did not.
The show (FIM) did only just enough world building to that point to seem to establish CM were a “pony” thing, and it was always taken that Zeroca’s mark there was more part of her nature stripes. Would have been nice to have a canon episode just a bit more on that, because we’re just shooting in the dark here (and doubt the current IDW comic line would do anything as well towards that).
Zecora certainly seems to have a mark. Maybe the monochrome design is a cultural effect. I’m reminded of one story (can’t remember the specifics, sadly,) where Muslim ponies have Arabic characters for cutie marks given Islamic aniconism.
