This actually brings up A LOT of implications and brings up A LOT of questions. This spell, created by Starswirl the Bearded was meant to affect the Elements of Harmony.
 
So…why was this great and powerful unicorn making a spell that was meant to be used with The Elements of Harmony? Why? How? When?
 
Then there’s the connection that the holders have with The Elements of Harmony. Why does Magic affect them in such a way? Was Starwirl Magic’s original holder like Twilight?
 
WHY WOULD STARSWIRL THE BEARD ATTEMPT TO CREATE SUCH A SPELL?!

Looking at the previews from the commercials and how Twilight’s freiend’s blast her with the Elements that apparently turns her into an Alicorn…
 
Was Starswirl the Bearded attempting to create a “Masterpiece” spell, that would allow the holder of magic to transform into an Alicorn?
