@Background Pony
It does feel really weird how it happened though. I think it would have been preferable to have the alicorn thing be all her, like the Ponyta Sparkle moment in Pinkie Keen. She is sent a letter by Celestia stating that since Shiny is part of the royal family that makes her part too, and she just wants to make it official and have a little fun by throwing a coronation. Tiny little things impede Twilight’s progress throughout the day, slowly turning her back into PsyTwi, everything becomes disorganised ala Winter Wrap-up (ooo bookending), and when she has a startling revelation of how to make everything come together in time, instead of going PsyTwi she has an SSJ-level ‘eureka’ moment where she bursts into flames and runs around telling everyone what to do in the most officially-sounding Canterlot voice, like a mini-Luna, slowly budding wings with every use of magic like levitation and teleportation and multi-task manhandling ala Rarity. By the end of her ‘rampage’, she notices the wings and calms down like “Oh, wow, neato.” and exits UniRage mode, but still with the wings. Celestia remarks upon not expecting her to earn it THAT way but says it’s a sign of her growing up and mastering her skills.
Also for fun, how bout this. A unicorn that ascends to an alicorn, much like a vampire, gains immortality at the MOMENT they ascend. So as they walk through Luna’s private chambers to fetch her for the ceremony you see pictures of an ancient and decrepit alicorn male in backgrounds. Why is he not around? Well, imagine if you got vamp’d at 90 years old and had to put up with a bad back and crinkly wobbly knees forever and ever. He fail’d it @ completing his spell, wound up hospitalised, realised his injuries would be with him for good, and made Luna ‘pull the plug’ so to speak. By sticking the appropriate pictures in the background of the ‘rotate background as they walk normally’ cinescope-esque searching for Luna scene, you can put across all that information without a single word.
I actually really disliked this episode, but I’m not mad at the MLP staff. I understand that their primary objective is to make a show for young girls, and they did their job properly. I just thought that the story was rushed, the alicorn thing completely unnecessary, and the overdone songs could have been taken out to make room for more plot progression. Like I said, the MLP guys did create a good episode and tried really hard to make it good, but it wasn’t enjoyable for me, but it’s not me they’re supposed to be trying to please, so I’m not bashing them for sticking to their primary demographic.
I didn’t feel the episode was rushed, but the fact that it had a song every 2 fucking seconds pissed me off.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I don’t like the music, but its really took up time where there should have been explanation, and extra pacing.
Overall I give it a 6/10.
I’m yet to see episodes of the same quality as the ‘Mid season 1’ area, but I guess we can all hope that Season 4 delivers.
And now another great wait between seasons begins…
@WatermelonRat
As I put it to a similar statement on /mlp/
“Dear Princess Celestia, today I learned that Saddle Arabians are fucking dicks and have very odd customs they will execute you for not following. My good friend Rarity was accused of being a harlot and stoned to death, and I think the Pinkie has the right idea in invading them with her new and improved “Friendship cannon,” which now fires nails and straight razors instead of party favours. I respectfully request Flim and Flam’s aid in mass producing such cannons, so that we may show them the Hoofton way of ‘befriending’ such miscreants.
Your faithful student of diplomacy and reasonable conflict resolution, Twilight Sparkle”
I watched the episode about three times now. Again it makes me feel really disappointed, not because of the downward spire the show has taken but the lazy ness of some of the creators.
One example the music lovely but how many songs were there? 4 or 3 ? Thats way more then there was in the first episode (or parts or 1 and 2 episodes I DONT CARE!!!) and thats just so stupid to add so much music in a tiny episode i mean the time i write this you could have watched the episode 2 times now! And thats sad because during other episodes the music fitted in so well and its a shame it had to just go pop.
Another thing characters what happened!? twilight sounded a octave higher sometimes and i could not put my hoof on it. (just a joke.)
Lastly and what i am supposed to be saying (dont really care i talked for a long time take that 4chan. BOOM) Alicorn twilight. Its nice to see that she is a upper person but seriously. A PRINCESS!? I mean what the hell.
Is MLP becoming more of a real fantasy where you suddenly write three lines of magic learn how to do friendship and become a princess. If thats the case let them make princess and sign me up for the next train to ponyville. (not really) But on a serious note if hasbro wants to lose the brony community (or some of it AGAIN I DONT CARE!) then they are going the right way. I go on MLP and look at tumblr and equestria daily people are liking a show which to them is important. Battling a battle against haters for MLP’s sake and when they say they are grateful for the support what do we get? (a song from another song.) no something that some poeple like and others hate.
Now for this to be fair i must agree that every action has its consequences so of course some people like and others hate. And i cant disagree with that because everyone has a say and there are no real good choices. But i go and look for a idea box for the show on the website and nothing is there (which i would expect since the show is for little girls so they wouldn’t really know many changes to make) but then i heard from a really interesting guy (no not a crackhead) who posted a documentary on bronies and said that the MLP staff see the ideas on websites and then try to make them reality. Clever or not depends.
As a conclusion (I went on a bit i know but still i talked about the episode of alicorn twilight) This idea is done if you hate it too late should have posted something on the internet and hoped MLP people had seen it.
@Zincy
I’m tolerant of some change, but this seriously changes the nature of the series. Not only does the main character physically change and go from student to princess, but I can’t see learning about friendship continuing to be a driving force of the series, seeing as Twilight is apparently such a friendship master now that she changed race. I can’t see alicorn Twilight fitting into the current format.
Sorry pal. I don’t like the change and it’s not for the strawman reason of “status quo is god” or anything of the sort. It does change the dynamics of the series in a way that I don’t feel was earned or necessary. If you don’t feel the same then that is fine.
To assume that anyone who is skeptical going into this is somehow just too afraid of change is bullshit though. Change can be good or it can be bad. I felt that this change was rushed, unnecessary, and will not bode well.
Merged a couple of other discussion threads into this one, might as well keep it all in one place; upload descriptions from those two were:
“Keep it classy! ;)”
“Greatest letdown of the century next to MML3 cancellation. Disequus.”
I don’t hate the concept of Twilight being coronated as a princess. Why the fuck would she want to be the Princess’ student if she wasn’t expecting something big planned for her future. I can respect that. However, what I can’t respect, is how it was executed. Really? It couldn’t wait until the series finale? Why would you throw what was thought by most to be the final destination of the shows plot, during one season, and then announce there is another season after? I don’t quite understand that. then again this show is basically a gimmick to sell toys. As for the episode itself. I didn’t like it. The old season premieres and finales had that “oomph” to it. A good introduction to the start of a new season, and a closer that will let you know it was worth watching. This seasons finale, didn’t give me that feel. It felt rushed. Lazily put together. It was if the writers took little to no effort in trying to present the plot. Animations are nice, but that’s not gonna carry the whole thing. In short. Twilight bursts in to song for some reason during the morning (Pinkie Pie would have been pissed. stealing her job.) and then it suddenly goes to her being hysterical over a mistake. That didn’t feel like the “calm and collective.” Twilight, from the episode before. Continuity? It didn’t really present the dilemma well either. “I ruined my friends lives. Oh well, better go fix it.” And as much as I love a nice little heartwarming song thrown in each premiere or finale, I don’t think it’s necessary to have one thrown in every 5 fucking seconds. Honestly, was the whole script written in song?
@Zincy
Are you on the /mlp/ thread? Someone literally just said that exact same thing!
This was the response:

So, if Harry Potter became principal of Hogwarts together with Dumbledore during his third year, while also gaining all the powers that Dumbledore had at the time, would you say that the “character development” and the future potential for “story telling” was good?
Someone doesn’t understand fallacies. I wasn’t strawman-ing, that would require me to make create a “strawman” target in order to dismantle an otherwise difficult to surmount argument.
My first line was more an ad homine attack on your character by inferring that you lack the ability to formulate arguments, by insinuating that the basis of your argument is something so trivial.
However, you didn’t provide me much to work with. The basis of your arguement is that the dynamic shift would alter the way you can be immersed, I.e. “It’s different therefore I don’t like it”.
“Things are different therefore I hate it”, thats the gist of your argument.
This isn’t new, this isn’t the first show/movie/Vg/book to do this. Sometimes there’s a character that’s set apart above the group, it doesn’t have to shift the dynamics.
You have the Frodos, the Harrys, The Green Rangers of the world.
it sucked. it’s like one of those lame ass cartoons that the nostalgia critic reviews. random songs popping out on the least fitting moment and over the top scenes that made you cringe. I hope season 4 will be better
@Zincy
The problem isn’t that she would have to leave her friends, its that the dynamics have fundamentally been shifted. Even if on the surface they act more or less the same, there’s no getting around the fact that she’s been set apart from her friends and other ponies, both physically and in status. Even if the other ponies in ponyville never pays attention to how odd it is that a princess is living in the library having random antics around town, the viewer will. It’s going to be a lot harder for the viewer to feel immersed in the show and to relate to Twilight as a character with this change.
perhaps we are looking at this the wrong way. alicorns are not god mode, they are in essence beings that have reached beyond their full potential and fulfilled their destiny to its fullest extent. the ending here hints at twilight having mastered ALL forms of magic, and anything that she doesn’t know is not a lack of skill, it’s a lack of knowledge. twilight’s special talent is no longer performing magic, she IS magic.
@Background Pony
Actually think that was the worst part. It’s probably one of the least expensive episodes created ever that isn’t a Lifetime Sitcom.
Well, that and there wasn’t actually a major crisis of some sort as a catalyst. This was basically like an employee review episode. With magic. She could at least have fought a volcano! :D
I like your idea better that the actual episode.
