Well that’s simple, when you die, either you refuse to die, and become a spirit, which will then go to the garden, either you jsut, go to the garden directly, as a spirit mind you.

Actually had one come to me right now!
 
So we have talked about spirits and how death works for them, but what mortals in the world?
 
Example: random pony/other race gets crushed by a piano. Would there ghost/spirit appear over there death site or would they simply pass on to the garden?
 
PS Reason I keep using piano is because it’s the most used cartoonish death I’ve seen over the years XD

Yes, her sister outlives her by approximately 20 years, not as a spirit, and the spirits who pass on go to the Garden, as mentioned earlier, basically a mystical place comparable to the paradise in a way, where all spirits go and live forever, greater spirits, such as heroes, kings and queens, god and the likes, have a giant hall there, where statues of them are put up to make sure everyone always remembers their accomplishments. Tho it’s only what folklore says, no one really knows if it exists, since the last person to have returned from there died thousands of years ago.

those are very tricky questions, so that’s gonna be a lengthy reply, grab some popcorn!
 
So first, the easiest, if a spirit dies, a few thing can happen, they can either become a haunting spirit, also known as a ghost, those are spirits which refused to die through hate/vengeance, and in this case, they become mindless vengeful spirits, those can be saved tho through the use of soul gems, which is what Mia has, as a spirit healer, it is her job to find lost spirits or ghosts, and help them trough to what is known as the Garden, the garden isn’t really anything anyone is knowledgeable about, as no one knows if it truly exists, and is only heard of in legends and folklore.
 
One way to heal a spirit, is to link with them, spirits can only interact with objects, and only very weakly, they can knock something down for example, or can cause mood changes in people, but to communicate properly with someone they must link themselves with a spirit healer, through the use of a soul gem.
 
What the spirit healer does next is either convince, or reassure the spirit/ghost, until they accept their fate and move on, or, they go on a quest to help them with that, certain spirit seek vengeance upon someone who hurt them, or others seek to talk to a relative one last time, Spirit healers are here to allow them to rest in peace, by trying to resolve any well… unresolved conflict they might still have.
 
now on the love part, it’s a bit more tricky.  
Mia mesa’s sister is stuck as a spirit, she was for the longest time, and the only person she could interact with with her sister, no one else could see her or even sense her, even other spirit healers couldn’t, because she wasn’t just a free roaming spirit, she WAS her sister, quite literally.
 
She “grew” as a spirit for dozens of years, and started developing feelings towards Mia, do understand that she never got any real outside education, the only thing she can see and hear, is Mia, moving around an endless black void.
 
Therefore she doesn’t really know how anything in the world works, and isn’t affected by how others tend to see things, so, she ended up falling in love with her very own sister.
 
Now it’s a bit more complicated on Mia’s part, she does love her sister, but in a sister kinda way yknow, but, much much later, after years of research and studies, Mia finally managed to bring her sister back to life, and the first thing Vintari did, is kiss her.
 
And it kinda went on from there, something to keep in mind that no one really knows Vintari is Mia’s sister, since she was gone for nearly 70 years. (Deers and such live much longer than one would expected, around 250 to 300 years)
 
So yeah, that’s the explanation, there’s actually a whole deal of happening parallel to that but that would take much much longer to explain.
 
On a side note, ironically, Mia Mesa will be the first one to pass away, don’t worry she does so in peace with her sister by her side :D

I imagine there love(sister love right?) For each other would allow them to become spirits if one of them kicked the bucket
 
But since you brought it up, what would happen if the spirit dies? Do they pass on to the afterlife?
 
PS now I can just imagine poor Mia going out in a cartoonist manner before floating upwards to Join her giggling sister who would hug her and welcome her to the spirit life XD

Yeah, both spirits are linked to the same body, if the body is no more… then it’s a bit complicated, mostly has to do with one’s will, if their will to survive is strong enough, they’ll stay as spirits, if not, they’ll die.
 
A short answer would be, the spirit is the person, but for a spirit to live, they must have enough life energy, also known as flow, if their flow runs out, their body can no longer be, but someone’s will can be enough for the flow to be enough, in this case, the only thing allowing Vintari to stay as a spirit, is her sister’s will for her to stay alive.
 
i guess the most likely scenario is that Mia might end up as a spirit, but her sister won’t, as she won’t be able to keep both of them alive through sheer will…
 
Or who knows, maybe their love for each over might help them through :)

PS actually was wondering this(lore/background question), but if something bad happened to the non spirit sister, would the other sister be stuck in the spirit form forever?

Pretty much yeah, long story short, Mia mesa’s (the yellow doe) sister, Vintari (the Blue one) got stuck as a spirit when she was young because of a magic mishap, and through the gemstone in her necklace, they can swap places.
