More that Thorax likely reacting to how Spike is willing to accept Thorax, regardless of what form… Thorax is in, so long as Thorax is comfortable with it.
Remember, Changelings can scan emotions. He’s likely picking out that Spike is Genuine with what he said.

It’s good to hear from you again.
Oh I’ve been around. I uploaded last week as a matter of fact. I’m just getting slower with age, and not having all the time in the world like I used to. That, and Warhammer kind of has a vice on me. Gotta get those minis painted!

I think this could be similar to Ocellus back in the Spike’s CYOA series by PapaDragon101, when she got drunk from too much love and she couldn’t change from her original turquoise color. She was stuck in her pre-reformation form of black with the jagged wings. Mind you that happened after a threesome with Smolder and Spike…
