I think the Doctor/Derpy pairing works surprisingly well. Wasn’t a fan of it initially, but the fandom really took a shine to it and I’ll admit it’s started to grow on me.
Well,is not about trying to reference Dr Who,I’m okay with that.
It’s actually the way they made it so blatantly obvious.
“Doctor WHOoves”…horse pun…not very thought out,in my opinion.Especially when we already have another pony with “Hooves” in her name.
One of the reasons Timer Turner was better.The reference was still there,but more subtle.
Fans noticed that he had spiky hair, a brown coat, and his cutie mark meant whatever he did was time-related. Who else has spiky hair, a brown coat, and works with time? David Tennant, aka the 10th Doctor.
It just clicked with the fanbase at large, and shortly thereafter fanworks featuring him started popping up everywhere.

His hair looks exactly like David Tennant’s and he has an hourglass cutie mark. What other parallel did you think people would make?
But yeah,why is it canon,now? I thought it was confirmed last year in some merchandise groups?
