I would say it makes it more unfocused, they just wanted to introduce as many toys as possible without trying to develop any of the characters. The only one that was mildly interesting was Minty.

Lol, seriously? :P  
Before the core 7 G3 didn’t even have a set of main characters, so no matter who they were going to throw a party for, it woudln’t have been one of the main ponies. It just kept introducing more and more characters, without really focusing on many of them. Kimono didn’t even appear in any of the future episodes.

How many times in Friendship is Magic have you seen a group of ponies use their time and resources all together to please someone that isn’t a Mane Six member or Princess Celestia? G3>G4 all day long.
