in my au’s sprout actually did not want to be sheriff he just wanted to make his mom proud and it grew on him personally i could see him wanting to be and architect or engineer

My theory is Sprout wants to be a sheriff, following his childhood dream. Hitch did NOT want to be sheriff. He was only helping his friend, Sprout. But sheriffs are nominated by the community. You don’t become sheriff like an ordinary job. It is by vote. The ponies of Maretime Bay nominated Hitch, not Sprout. Hitch felt bad because he felt he accidentally took is friend’s dream away. So he made Sprout deputy. Not by merit but by guilt and nepotism.

It may have caused more harm than good because Sprout is not good at being a deputy. He is good at “other things” and as long as he’s fixated on trying to be sheriff, Sprout will never discover or embrace the other things that he’s good at.
