It makes an AMAZING agua fresca or milkshake; if you’re ever anywhere from south Texas to northern South America, definitely try to track some down.

They taste a lot better than they smell– they smell like a rotten onion in a sweaty gym sock– but it is very, very much a particular taste that you either like or double-plus hate. If you ever have the chance, try some durian-flavored candy, and you’ll know which camp you’re in; it doesn’t have the smell, but has a decent approximation of the taste.
It’s… not my thing, but I can see why it’s popular with a lot of people.

How do they taste?
Durians? They’re pretty unique. The texture is like a custard or an avocado, though not too dense. I can’t really describe the taste in terms of anything but itself. It’s sweet and a little fatty, in terms of actual tongue-tastes, but there’s nothing that reminds me of durian. It’s a stretch but maybe a combination of a very sweet avocado and a jackfruit, with a hint of onion but without the piquancy?
… Yeah, durian is hard to describe. You can just order some freeze-dried online. The texture is different from the freeze drying but the taste is pretty similar.

I haven’t, as I’m a vegetarian. I gather it’s very smelly. The durian does not really have a remarkable smell to me. It smells faintly of fish, which is not my favorite smell but isn’t a particularly offensive smell. Apparently, the very wide disparity in how people interpret the smell of durians is due to genetics. I don’t know how I ended up with the lucky durian smelling allele, but I won’t complain, durians are delicious…
