But if the connection to the celestial bodies is what kept Celestia and Luna long lived, how is Twilight not despite being the one controlling them? (Her grown up form and hair means she must have tapped into that larger power.)
Thought, being the Princess of Friendship means her longevity is tied to friendship. So given what would happened to her friends (remember “Twilight will not outlive her friends”) and friendship in the land…

It will not be that simple. This is a Jigsaw puzzle game with many puzzles that must be collected, to find out what happened.
We know that Canterlot was hastily abandoned as if a catastrophe had occurred, Discord lost his horn which Sunny found among the ruins. We know that Discord will prevent pony magic for reasons we do not yet know, but also that his motives for taking the pegasi crystal are related to his mourning after the Mane 6 was gone. In any case, there were many centuries between Fluttershy’s death and Equestria’s collapse, and we do not know why the ponies in the G5 suffered collective memory loss, or why the pony magic had become so destabilized. Discord appeared to have remained in the ruins of Canterlot until TYT happened, when he possibly sensed the opening of the “hole”, in deep isolation. Izzy found out that someone had broken out of Canterlot.
It would be wrong to hold Discord responsible for the disaster that wiped out G4, one should rather make him a puzzle for Sunny and Zipp who need to find out the truth. And it gets too simple; Discord is not exactly a supervillain who can be held responsible for everyone; his role in S8-S9 was not well received. It is possible that he was actually a victim of what happened when Equestria came under attack. But by whom?
And how could the whole of Middle Equestria disappear completely as seen on the movie? And in the IDW comics it was revealed that the landscape around Canterlot had become unrecognizable, which could only have happened if the ponies were gone - and had forgotten. And the Harmony tree! Discord can not touch harmony magic if he so wanted, this is the opposite of his chaos magic. How could the tree lose its crystallization? Not even the ruins around the tree could be found, as if an atomic bomb had exploded there. The Everfree is gone, Bridlewood is outside the valley where the G4 had taken place.
In any case, it looks like Twilight had lost. Then we can only hope that she is out there somewhere, hoping that Sunny will return to Equestria. But the mysterious alicorn that may be in the Crystal Empire will have a say in this - and she’s one of the many puzzles, as she’s obviously meant to be a villain. Maybe she knows about Discord, but considered him a harmless old man who can be manipulated and will stay in the background.
As said; the past has caught up with G5 - and it’s the Mane 5 that has to deal with this; many secrets, many riddles and threats.
At least G5 is more “mature” than G4 in the IDW comics.

Ehh, I’ll stick to them being immortal, but… Wow, didn’t expect that.

Twilight does not have this advantage, although her magic is based on the element of Magic. She could, if possible, age faster than Celestia over the centuries.
And in the cover it can be seen that she pretended to prepare to fight a mysterious enemy, and she takes it very seriously, as if it is her last fight. Which can be it.
The feathers around Sunny may possibly have meant she is dead, but Hasbro has not “confirmed” her death, and instead two facts are symbolized; that Sunny is her successor, and that the Unity Crystals are very important to Twilight - and the Mane 6.

There apparently appears to be a wrinkle on Twilight, if you look closely.
