I don’t think Zephyr’s growth was related to being smug. He saw how scummy they treated women like simply sex objects or means of earning money, and it was THAT aspect he came to regret about himself. He’s still a douche, just not in a perverted way.
BTW, nice to see you on Derpibooru. Got the same name and type of profile picture from Fimfiction, so I recognized you right away.

He is. But everyone isn’t a single note character. Not everyone is mature all the time, and Spike is rarely challenged. When things are good, he’s good. But how is he when his life is challenged? His only previous challenge was when he was barred from his massage business.

I wouldn’t really call that out of character. Zephyr’s whole personality is like that to begin with. He might see the wrong way to act and the right way, but it doesn’t mean he will immediately learn and do the right thing. I know complaining isn’t useful for example, but I still do it and try to change my actions if I catch myself doing it.
Wow. Spike’s acting incredibly childish right here, which is odd since he’s often portrayed as very mature in this series. Twilight’s reaction is perfect, it portrays the disbelief very well.
Apparently this is what some people feel like when they suddenly retire and don’t have other things to do (like building radio-controlled airplanes or fake radio-controlled monsters to terrorize the neighbors with).
It is not that you are not needed, it is now you have help, or can take a break. But I know that feeling of having to do a chore on a two to three times a day basis, and how you do not know what to do with yourself when you suddenly do not have to do it. Like, what do you do with all that free time?
I’m a Spike fan til I die so I’m just going to blame Twily for always assigning him to be the housekeeper to the point of him believing he is not needed when there isn’t any housekeeping to do and move on.
I wonder what the Crusaders are doing in the meantime.
oh hey, a fellow fimfictioner~ Nice, ty~

I assume that the series tend to have OOC moments occasionally.
