That, like a lot of things is head canon though, it’s an understandable theory, but not necessarily the truth. As I said they are biologically immortal or at least long lived. A human mind could not handle living that long simply by virtue of how much information must be contained. But the princess’s have so logically their minds do not work in the same way. Again this is theory, but considering they act happy, seem happy and haven’t lost their mind sin a way tied to living for a long time, it stands to reason that they aren’t depressed.

I’ve done thought exercises about it. Thousands of years is more than enough time to learn how to control ones emotions, and the tearful reunion was the shell cracking slightly because trying to suppress emotions at all times is truly impossible, or the emotions were so powerful that they couldn’t be suppressed or Celestia was so happy to see her sister again that she wanted her to know it. Luna fall was nothing more than the result of a failed suppression and subsequent possession by said emotions, as goes “I got so made, that I pretty much just lost control.” at least that’s how I see it.

That seems unlikely given Luna’s fall to NMM and Celestia and Luna crying when reunited ETC. If they had a normal (that is mortal mind) then they would have gone insane by this point. A normal mortal mind is literallt not designed to last that long or too absorb that much information. The fact the two of them are still around and seemingly happy implies their minds work in a manner completely different to their mortal subjects.

they may “seem” happy, but they’ve also had the same amount time to learn how properly suppress and hide their emotions from the public. Something I wish I hadn’t done.

Considering Celestia and Luna, are both over 1000 years old and seemingly quite happy I’d imagine natural born immortals are biologically programmed to be able to withstand the rigors of eternity. and considering we don’t know any immortals in the real world I find pitying them a bit odd, personally I feel the princess’s eternal youth seems great. Though Twi’s not going to outlive her friend anyway, so I doubt this discussion is a necessary one. Sorry if I seemed rude.

for a while…..then watches as everyone you’ve ever cared for age and die in front of you. You will never be able to engage in any kind of meaningful relationship, lest you watch them age and die in front of you. You will never be able to make any good friends, lest the same happen to them.

I don’t envy those whose don’t age…I pity them. Because of the sorrow they carry, the sorrow of watching all of their friends and family die of old age while they remain eternal.

How is it a bad thing, it’s we mortal who write about immortal so I guess out of jealousy we might make it so it sounds awful, but an immortal creature would be psychologically capable of living an immortal life and it’s not like she would be alone.
oh and Twilight was noted as not being immortal or more accurately not going to outlive her friends.

@Background Pony
Really ? You start your argument with “you obviously didn’t xxx because I love making assumptions and I know it is true bcz i iz smurt” ? Sigh, that’s never a good sign. Ok now, where did I say that she wouldn’t be depressed over it ? Unless you’re saying that a comic about her getting over it and carrying on is impossible because she MUST be depressed, ALL the time ?

Anyway, people died in my life: my father, my older sister, one of my best friends, various grandparents and uncles/aunts.

But guess what, time passed and I’m eating an icecream on a sunny day and I’m getting ready to leave so I can hang out with my other friends. But I guess that’s not enough DRAMA to make a good comic ? Oh wait, there are good comics about Twilight being happy, like that one where she hangs out with the kids/grandkids of her friends.

One thing nobody seems to ever consider when dealing with immortal beings is the fact that the brain is a finite size (at least with IRL humans).

Since the amount of data that can be stored in a storage device tends to be directly related to the amount of matter in said device (that is, a large device with the same storage mechanisms as a small one will tend to hold more memory), this means that, theoretically, the brain has a limited storage capacity.

According to Scientific American, the human brain might hold something close to 2.5 petabytes of information, which is roughly 300 years of continuous video footage. While this is a VERY large amount of data, the length of an immortal being’s life is MUCH longer.

It is possible that immortal beings eventually just forget everything that has happened in the past, long, long ago. Perhaps if one were to ask Celestia and Luna what their parents looked like or where they grew up, they would not be able to recall ANYTHING.

You obviously never considered the possibility of losing YOUR friends when you’re immortal, you’re obviously gonna be sad about it.

Lets not forget that Twilight’s friends were the first friends (Apart from Spike & Celestia) she had when she came to Ponyville so she’s gonna feel depressed when she loses them!

Why do people never look on the bright side of immortality, like having the honour to live long enough to experience many more friendships and to tell those to come of how great were those who passed away.

@Amber
Also considering the fact that Megan and the others like to joke around, some people get mixed messages that she may have very well been joking about a non-immortal alicorn twilight.

Whether or not it will be true, will have to be revealed in the show itseld.

I tend to think (hope) that dragons in this universe live forever. That way spike would at least be alive.

Are we gonna get like 50,000 of these before Season 4 or what? Even though DHX has basically confirmed that Twilight will not outlive her friends?
