In your group, keeping information secret via note-passing or one-on-one conversation might not be cause for concern. But when you’re dealing with a new player (or character) whose motivations and intentions are completely unknown to you… that might be a good time to ask what their deal is.

DM: As you get your bearings in the central plaza, you see a bright pink pony coming down the street.
Pinkie Pie: Ooh, ooh, that’s me, that’s me!
Twilight Sparkle: Thank goodness! After all these NPCs, it’s nice to just talk to another-
Pinkie Pie: (GAAAASP) (ZOOM!)
Twilight Sparkle: Uh… Hold on. Did that actually happen?
Pinkie Pie: (scribble scribble)
Twilight Sparkle: Is that… a note? Are you… WHY ARE YOU PASSING NOTES TO THE DM?!?
