This doesn’t happen as often as you think. Rarely are the PCs lacking for any direction or motivation. They just… tend to be motivated in different, unexpected, and unusual ways.

DM: Alright, are we ready? Just so you know: After staying up all night, Spike can’t continue into the sunless morning.
Twilight Sparkle: M-My familiar? But…!
DM: You can still keep his Passive benefits, but you can’t switch him into Active mode while he’s asleep.
Twilight Sparkle: Fan…tastic. I’ll just leave him at home, then.
Rainbow Dash: Hey! Maybe we can focus on the night goddess that just got away! What do we do about that?!
Twilight Sparkle: I… I don’t know, to be honest. I’m at a loss.
DM: What? What about the Elements of Harmony?
Applejack: The what now?
DM: You know, the magical… Did any of you listen to the campaign opening??
