I mean, we don’t actually know that vampires in that universe are immortal, just because in our mythology they are. Vampires in human mythology also don’t eat apples. And unicorns don’t work anything like Earth unicorns (in mythology) actually work, and so on.

Going back to the immortality question, it occurs to me that Fluttershy, in her Flutterbat mode, is a vampire and thus is immortal. But when she reverts back to normal mode, she has normal mortality. It’s interesting that a being can switch back and forth between immortality and not (also interesting to think there’s at least one more class besides god/alicorns and sirens which has immortality).

That’s a very interesting idea that magic is traded off between the inanimate elements of the world and the magical creatures in it. Do unicorns have the same magic? Does that perhaps explain magically challenged unicorns like Sweetie Belle; they were born when there was little magic bound up in the rocks, etc, so their’s is weaker?

When magic is bound up in the rocks, etc.; there is great ambient magic (potential magic) in the world. But this magic isn’t flowing (being used), so it tends to stagnate, creating timberwolves and poison joke and chaos magic. [Discord?]

Powerful magic users are able to extract this ambient magic and put it to use (make it flow). This includes powerful pegasi and earth ponies as well as unicorns, since magic has multiple flavors. {changlings and kyrnn and dragons, oh my!]

Nature creates an alicorn as a very useful remedy when the stagnant magic reaches very high levels, since alicorns constantly extract at least three types of magic from the environment, just by existing.
Alicorns also express the magic (make it flow), at levels far above that of the most powerful unicorn.
[eg. moving the sun, supporting love worldwide, destroying the crystal heart]

At least in my headcanon (and I suppose actual canon, in the Stellarator Pornographic Universe) I see being elevated to being an alicorn as also being elivated to godhood, or at least demi-godhood. That’s why I had Twilight refer to her getting her wings as her “apotheosis”.

Though if alicorns are made, not born (usually) then Flurry Heart raises questions. Maybe all three new princesses are part of a plan by C&L to eventually obsolete themselves? That’s more or less where the show went.

I really like your thinking.

I postulate that the planet has a consciousness (aethersphere) and a cycle of magic (like the water cycle on Earth).
The magic must flow; the magic will flow - Dune(ish).
When too much magic is bound up in the rocks, soil, trees, and waters; nature will call out for an alicorn to be created (ascended or born). Other alicorns can sense when the conditions are ripe and they can nudge an individual (Twilight) towards the actions that precede an ascension.
Flurry Heart was a surprise because no alicorn had ever given birth during a time when the planet was calling out.

I mean, it wouldn’t be that hard to make the basic timeline work. I’d just need to have Shining Armour and Cadance be older relative to Twilight, so they could have gotten married when Twilight was a lot younger. Though that might stretch things too much, now that I actually do the math. It would also mean that everything with the changelings in the Crystal Empire wouldn’t have happened, at least not the way it did in the show.

Managing an AU, especially one that blends multiple timeilnes, is hard XD

Hmmm, that got me thinking. Is immortality an alicorn trait or a god trait? Are all alicorns inherently gods, or are Celestia and Luna unique in that regard? Twilight is called the Princess of Friendship, not the God of Friendship, so maybe she’s not a god? And Candance is called Princess of Romantic Love and Sexy Times (or something like that), not a god like Aphrodite. Maybe alicorns are just very long lived, but not immortal unless they’re also gods?

It is interesting to think about the lore, but it still puts a wall between Celestia/Luna and Cadance/Twilight/Flurry. Meaning they are not ‘real’ alicorns or gods or Princesses or whatever.
I feel that the new alicorns are inherently not one bit less than the older ones (except in life experience).

My headcannon is that all alicorns are functionally immortal. The magic of the planet, Equus?, creates them, powers them, heals them, and keeps them young as long as they wield their powers. An alicorn might start to age if she doesn’t use any magic for a long time (1000+ yrs), or if she is cut off (banished) from the planet that powers her. They can be defeated (knocked out, imprisoned, mind controlled); but, to be killed outright, would take more power than Discord can snap up.

I agree with all those things, especially difficult. After all, Twilight et al are around 10 years older than the CMC, and the CMC are around 10 years older than Floury Heart, so the timeline would have to be warped by like 20 years. OTOH, when characters move between the equestria universe and the EG universe their ages change in non-linear ways, so maybe the same thing happens when they move to the Stellaratorverse.

I absolutely agree with you about the difference in life experience betweeen the older and younger alicorns.

As for the immortality, I have never subscribed to the ‘lesser kind of alicorns’/‘not real alicorns’ theory forwarded by some fans back in Season 3.
It reminded me too much of U.S. Jim Crow laws [you may be citizens now, but you’re not “real” citizens who can vote].

I feel that Luna’s point was that love with mortals is precious and beautiful even if it is short-lived. If Luna and Sonata have a relationship in the future, I doubt that it will be monogamous.

I suppose the difference in this case is that most polytheistic mythos usually have lots of immortal gods. This world is pretty short on those. Other than the Sirens, we just have the three Princesses. One of them is Luna’s sister, and while the other one is probably immortal NOW, she doesn’t have an immortal’s perspective and life experience, since she’s still young.
