In general, everything is much simpler. In the original series, it was shown that all five were friends before Twilight came. Specifically, this was shown in episode 1 of season 7, when Celestia talked about her experiences about sending Twilight away. (I specifically found it so as not to be unfounded) It’s also funny that she directly declares her knowledge about these “special group of fillies in Ponyville”
it’s funny that in the story she also lists two dangers that Twilight really faced in the future.

Pixel Perfection - Hot Pockets Spotted
Solar Supporter - Fought against the New Lunar Republic rebellion on the side of the Solar Deity (April Fools 2023).

I think for the most part they were just acquaintances who met every so often at the market. I always figured it was just pure happenstance that they were not only in charge of some aspects of the Summer Sun celebration, they then kinda just ran along with Twilight and it stuck.
Of course thanks to a certain Comic book A lovely Princess already knew who would all become friends so assigning them duties so that Twilight would be forced to meet them was a subtle idea.
Aj would be most likely to have met all of them, thanks to being the head of Sweet Apple Acres, and having sold them all food… some of which might have been bought and used by the Cakes.
In any case im super hyped to see what you come up with.. good luck!

I guess that makes sense one day they meet and some how they just ended up being friends.
