Singular they has hundreds of years of usage history in English. Only linguistic prescriptivists and modern transphobes pretend there’s anything wrong with it.

In my native dialect of English, “they” has long since been used to refer to a person (singular) of unknown sex or gender. Saying “he or she” in conversation is awkward to my ear. Is using the singular “they” proper Standard American English (SAE) or proper Standard British English (SBE)? No, but it is a perfectly valid use of the word in many vernacular dialects of the language. Language evolves over time.

The word “they” still bothers me.
I learned if the word “they” is used, at least two people are meant, or a person of royality.
