1, 4, 5, and 3

Definitely 4, 5, and 3. The atmosphere and the character moments of Roots of All Evil was/were top notch, even if the proceedings were somewhat rushed, and Opaline’s defeat was thematically appropriate (all the ponies uniting together) - it helps that Magic in Us is definitely one of the best G5 songs (I legit got goosebumps).

I especially like how Izzy came the closest to successfully dealing with Opaline before the rainbow of light - speaking of which, I don’t see any dip in her character post-movie, especially in MYM.

And I felt Opaline’s ultimate fate was all too appropriate, being stripped of her cutie mark, her power, condemned to be stuck in the roots of her bastardized Together Tree for all eternity (with that tree probably feeding off her magic).

Secrets of Starlight is gorgeous and also quite fun - were it not such an odd note to end MYM on, I would easily rate it my favorite special, but as it is, it’s probably tied with Winter Wishday. Love both Comet and Violet Frost, and the auroricorns in general, and I think Allura’s voice is very enticing. Her design took some getting used to, but I think I could really grow to like her. It feels like the very last scene was purely padding, just stretching the episode to meet the required time.

Probably why I like it so much is that the character stuff has always been my favorite part of MLP.

A combination of 1, 5 and 7. If it wasn’t for some flaws, I would’ve been at a 3 as well.

I didn’t think she was mocking Opaline at all. I think it’s a testament to Misty’s empathy; even after all the horrible things Opaline did to Misty, Misty can look at her and not feel hatred for a monster, but pity for a pony just as alone as she was.

Definitelly a “Why you took my daugther?! / You will never took us appart again!” would have been very appreciated, both for the drama and to know how Misty ended in Opals hooves.

When you don’t grow up with someone as your parent, you don’t associate with them in the same way. I’m like this with my distant biological father; I don’t call him “dad” either, it’s weird.
So at this point, Alphabittle and Misty are not loved ones.

That said, while I understand her connection to her tree was there, she did follow Opaline through the portal, meaning Misty could’ve transported to Bridlewood, and have her confrontation could’ve put Alphabittle in the loop.

You’re right, Alphabittle confronting Opaline, at least for a short scene, was a suuuuuuuper missed opportunity.

6, 8, 9

For me, Chapter 6 was easily the most disappointing MLP entry this year.
The “ending” was kinda anticlimatic and rushed, but it was expected.

What really pissed me off, though, is the way Misty was written, especially in the second part of the finale.
To begin with, she feels ooc to me in this episode, especially when she says to Opaline that “she actually feels sorry for her”. She doesn’t even sound empathetic here, it’s more like she’s only mocking Opaline or trying to insult her, which just feels off somehow. Please, don’t get me wrong, I like how Misty finally stand up against her former abuser, but some of her lines still felt jarring. I mean, her element supposed to be “empathy”, after all.

The reason why I wrote 6 is that it feels rather sad that until Chapter 6, every chapter felt like an improvement over the previous one. I think I’d be much more forgiving if this wasn’t the last officially confirmed 3D and story-centric content for G5. Or if instead of the Secrets of Starlight special they’d have gave us a proper conclusion at least for this arc, in 1 or 2 additional episodes.

I did like how Opaline, trying to raise a tree on togetherness, hope, and Friendship (unity), struggled with it. In the end, it took her cutie mark and encased her in a crushing hug from all sides. Seemed fitting.

The final confrontation between all of Equestria (sorta) and her was also interesting, and that it took the Rainbow magic from G1 to help, but her battle with Sunny was really underwhelming. Might’ve cheapened the ending.

Felt the same with Secrets of Starlight. The art was fantastically beautiful, and they didn’t use such gaudy glitter colors on the characters, but the new villain seems… meh. Maybe G4 spoiled me with the epic-ness of the villains.

Yeah it’s pretty good.

If we’re judging it purely in terms character moments and giving characters stuff to do, then it’s pretty great. But the story has structural problems, and Opaline’s defeat wasn’t as satisfying as I’d hoped.

In order, 4, 7, 8, 9, 6… with like a small dash of 1 every other episode.

I just feel like there was so much they could have done with G5 but just didn’t, I wish the writers from the movie had been hired for the show tbh.
Although, to be fair to the MYM writers they probably had Hasbro demanding certain stuff or vetoing other things and it’s been confirmed by some staff that there was no plan and they weren’t given any time to sit and hash it out so I guess it’s not really on them but the higher-ups once again ruining something for a quick buck rather than waiting on something great… I will however hold the writers accountable for what they did to my girl Izziy and my boy Hitch, they are not the same characters as the movie ones and it hurts since I loved them in the movie.

I’m just sad really, every now and then G5 has that spark of greatness and then in the next second will ruin it somehow.
