My theory is that Misty liked Opaline much more as a child when she would teach her basics of reading and writing which is why she drawn that picture of her and put it on the wall like kids would do with their parents drawings. Its probably when Misty grown older when they distanced themselves to the point we see them in MYM. While Opaline is completely clueless when it comes to family or friendship and was a terrible mother, in the end she did wanted Misty to be by her side. Considering she didn’t need servants as she had dragon slaves, Opaline in genuine way wanted to have something that resemble a pony friend, possibly even share power with her over Equestria. I think there is a story that could be told in the flashbacks in future episodes that make Opaline look more like Omni-Man from invincible or Zabuza from Naruto. Assholes with a sign of a beating heart under thick cold stone shell.
