Solar Supporter - Fought against the New Lunar Republic rebellion on the side of the Solar Deity (April Fools 2023).

Five generations aside, related by marriage doesn’t mean said married couple didn’t have kids. Possibly Pinkie’s odd causality abilities come from the Apple side. But then that happy gene wore down after a few generations. I find it likely that there is blood relation. Just very far back. And the Pie family seems rather broken in regards of extended family. So it makes sense they were so welcoming of connecting to the Apple family. Still, they really should have done more with Limestone and Marble before the series ended. Maud got a boyfriend, and Pinkie got married and had a foal. But Limestone seems like she’d have a hard time dating, and Marble is so skittish that she latched onto Big Mac because he was almost as closed mouthed as herself.

The reason I think it’s a retcon, is she outright tells the ponies her motives are to feed her changelings, and she wasn’t provoked to do that: she wasn’t trying to justify her actions or win someone over to her side, so it really seemed like exposition for the viewers. So while she’s going for power, it really does seem like she’s taking over to control Equestria as a food source rather than just for the hell of it. They dropped all of that later, by having the changelings not actually have to feed on love at all, which to me came off as a retcon to reform what they felt were unreformable monsters, which now made her just a “wants power because bored” villain. So I think what happened is they realized their most sympathetic villain was also one who “forced herself” onto Shining Armor, and they needed to change that, but they also understood that you really couldn’t call the changelings “evil” for doing what they did. So they retconned it so they didn’t actually feed on love, and that Chrysalis was just obsessed with power, so the changelings would have a reason to 100% turn on her. Besides, they could have kept her original motive of “find food for her kind” completely intact without changing that episode: Thorax tells them they don’t actually have to steal love and can just share it, Chrysalis is outraged that they don’t “need” her or her ways anymore and swears vengeance, and this sets her up for a plunge into worse villainy. That implies to me they deliberately wanted to change her to remove sympathetic elements from her :P
And don’t get me wrong. “Most sympathetic” doesn’t mean she’s a good guy or an anti-hero. She’s sympathetic like a predator in a predator/prey relationship: she’s doing what her species needs to do to survive, like a lion killing an antelope, but it’s villainous to the thing she’s preying on. It’s just that a creature doing what it is biologically required to do to survive is a hell of a lot more sympathetic than a princess who tries to kill her sister and take over because she doesn’t get enough attention, an incel who kidnaps and tortures people because a boy who probably didn’t even know her name friendzoned her in kindergarten, or a crystal-obsessed warlord who wants to rule a country because there’s nothing good on TV. She’s the most sympathetic villain because she’s the only villain who’s actions were actually motivated by more complex interests rather than simple greed or malice :P

The problem is, though, is they also acknowledged it by doing that. They were separated by 8 generations: after 5 generations there’s no blood relation anymore, the relation was via marriage not blood in the first place, and the episode was ambiguous whether their families were ever linked. The relationship was so non-existent they could have ignored it and nobody would have cared. By going out of their way to sink it, all they did was call a ton of attention to it and embolden shippers :P

Yeah, I don’t blame them in regards to the potential incest thing. Shippers go nuts for forbidden fruit relationships. That said, I’m pretty sure the Apple family and Pie family are related. And Goldie Delicious is the link. Even though she’s a member of the Apple family, she has numerous traits like Pinkie Pie. Like curly hair and a strange ability to manipulate causality around her, just not on the same level Pinkie can. Goldie pulled something out from under a stack, and the stack did not fall apart, it just dropped. But pinkie has the power to such an extent that she could pull a scroll out from the bottom of a stack, and the stack just hovers there. And they went out of their way to show both Pinkie and Goldie doing these things in the same episode. Pinkie and Goldie are both information keepers by nature as well. Only Pinkie has a method to her madness while Goldie hoards. But the hoarder part also connects to Applejack because for a while she couldn’t throw anything broken away.
Likely Goldie is directly connected to the part of the Apple family that married into the Pie family. Don’t forget that most other members of the Pie family are extremely dull and antisocial, despite their relatively warming family name. Pinkie almost seems like she’s adopted. But she likely got the same gene as Goldie from her grandfather. Genes are known to skip generations. Which likely gave Pinkie her the pink coloring too. And the Pie family didn’t seem to bother with record keeping. They intentionally live in the middle of nowhere just to be left alone. My guess is the rest of the current Pie family are either dead or estranged.

I could definitely see it. They actually admitted they didn’t pursue the Marblemac thing because of the incest implication, even though there was no actual confirmation they were related, they were related through incredibly distant relatives, AND those relatives were only “related” via marriage and not blood. Not wanting a Cheerilee #MeToo accusation seems pretty reasonable. I think it’s the same reason they took Chrysalis, the only villain thus far who actually had the more complex, more understandable, and even somewhat sympathetic motive of “I need to find food for my subjects”, and retconned her into a “wants more power because being stronger than Celestia and ruling an entire kingdom isn’t enough” villain. Let’s be real, she was disguised as one of two soon-to-be married lovers, who were living together for what was probably weeks at least, and she fed off of Shining Armor’s vaguely-defined “love” enough to one-shot Princess Celestia BEFORE Celestia was getting one-shotted once per season: there’s no way she wasn’t riding Shining Armor’s baloney pony the entire time if you catch my drift :P

Oddly enough it feels like the only reason Cheerilee was replaced with Sugar Belle as Big Mac’s love interest was because of Equestria Girls. Cheerilee being a teacher while Big Mac was a student, they probably didn’t want to push the idea of a relationship like that. Even though they initially implied it with EG Big Mac and CXheerilee walking together at the fair. Not complaining though because I actually liked Sugar Belle.
