The point that the designs are absolute crap and could have easily been better is solid, even with some shaky arguments.
You can have an agender\ambiguous sex protagonist, or have protagonists of both genders.
Some cartoons and shows usually have only male protagonists, and if there is a girl, she is a shallow love interest that was added to appeal to girls. With two girls, the prettier-looking would be the main character s’ love interest which is a shallow girly-girl personality, and the other girl would be tomboyish and be more action-y. Three girls, we have the shallow love interest which is also a ditzy blonde, the hotheaded tomboyish redhead, and the nerdy, smart brunette. Four girls, let’s add a goth one. Five girls, let’s add a weird, quirky one, six girls, let’s add a country\naturey one. (In MLP:FIM, Twilight would be the nerd, Rarity the girly one, Pinkie the weird one, Rainbow the tomboy one, and in absence of a goth one, Applejack and Fluttershy are country and naturey, respectively.) (Homestuck has Kanaya = girly, Aradia = goth, Nepeta = country\naturey, Vriska = tomboyish, Terezi = weird, and trading their “nerd” for Feferi, who is a mix of country\naturey and girly.)
Sorry, I meant I want toylines to stop pushing this crap.
Yeah, I guess that’s a bit of a silly thought. I did see this kind of shocking study of kids as young as preschool age. Basically they were given a choice between a “chubby” playing piece to represent themselves as in a game, a “normal” one, and a “thin” one. Almost all the girls chose the thin one, sometimes even refusing to touch the fat one, complaining “I don’t like her, she has a fat stomach.”
Even more shocking is that many children as young as six hate their size and even want to diet. True, many children are overweight nowadays, but I still find that worrying.
Sorry I’m throwing a bunch of statistics at you, what I’m saying is I just want toylines to keep pushing crap like this by making their characters unnaturally thin, and the fact that FiM has joined this craze is disappointing.
That much is agreeable, although it really saddens me to think of kids who form their world view based on Saturday cartoons ALONE. I wonder if boys out there all think that you’re not manly enough until you bulk up and/or learn to climb the walls and/or have a number of expensive hi-tech gadgets equipped.
It’s not an “evil plan”. It’s just bad messages.
Oh, so it’s the opposite.
I’m a male, I’m just criticizing these males who are whining about things unimportant to them…
But when Hasbro makes incredibly skinny character designs, everyone loses their minds!
Do you think people should refrain from positive positive, or neutral, opinions? Or do you just think it’s only good to stifle viewpoints you oppose?
@PonyFlea
Your point? Are you implying something sexist about men wanting realistic depictions of women?
@Itsthinking
Really? ONLY person with a “dissenting opinion”? Don’t pretend you’re some lone wolf against an angry mob. There are plenty on your side, and mods to say “be polite” when they really mean “stop being negative”.
Argh, Derpibooru logged me out so I commented as BP.
Fair enough. And I admit, there are some aspects of the designs I like (such as the wings but no horns, that’s how I always imagined human ponies). I think I read somewhere Titans got cancelled because of a contract issue, though (I could very well be wrong on that one.) Either way, too many cartoons nowadays are toy driven, and we can’t do much but accept it and move on.
(Given how often my flippant remarks get misinterpreted (pretty much always), in retrospect that probably wasn’t the best way to put it. But yes, props to DHX.)
I know, right? It’s like DHX is actually good at their jobs or something.
I do like that they look a lot better animated than as vectors.
Yeah, I can’t say I’m happy with the EqG designs, but they’re miles better than Bratz, and they look a bit better animated in the trailer than they have in the promo images, largely because DHX is obviously being allowed some leeway to be cartoony with them. I understand the designs are the way they are because it’s also a fashion doll line, and I’m not going to claim they’ll cause body image issues in impressionable little girls… but it would’ve been nice if DHX could have used something like the Skill:Draw design.
Ah well, it is what it is, and the final EqG designs are a lot more watchable than, say, “6teen” or “Johnny Test”.
Just ask Sym-Bionic Titan.
Agreed (which makes sense since I put it here). It’s funny that Skill:Draw’s style is closer to FiM’s than EG (except the animation.)
And thank you for commenting something other than “OH EM GEE HOW DARE U H8 ON EG FUK U FUK U FUK U”
I just want to say that I really like the humanized Pinkie Pie at the bottom of the image, and there’s been very few humanizations that I could say that I liked at all. Well done, Skill:Draw crew.
And I thought I was cynical.
June 16th will be an interesting day.
Apparently cartoons are the sole source of the way people decide how they act, dress, and feel.
